Last week my husband and I attended a wedding of some friends of ours. Whilst brainstorming what to get them as a wedding gift a few months ago I stumbled upon something very beautiful, but very expensive. I decided to keep it in the back of my mind, but more than likely planned to get them something from their registry. Although they had many wonderful items in their theme on their registry, I ended up changing my mind as I couldn’t get the first items I discovered out of mind!
This was a very difficult decision for me, as I have become a wedding registry nut ever since my own wedding. Typically a couple registers for items they either do not have, need an upgrade for, or something beautiful to add to their home or kitchen. When we received many items for our wedding that we had not registered for (because we already had them), I decided that unless I was getting something that had a specific meaning behind it, I would try to stick with their registry to be sure they received something they would use.
When I started to do some research on potentially purchasing said item(s) I found a wonderful tutorial by Lucy Langlois on the blog Lucy Designs. So, I decided to dive in and hand paint a set of four wine glasses with peacock feathers for Mr. and Mrs. Peacock!
While out procuring all of the items needed for their gift, I discovered the perfect peacock lidded box to gift the glasses in once completed. I used Lucy’s advice as well and used a couple of different paint brands in order to get the colors I was hoping to have for the look I wanted. Be sure to double-check that all of the paint you use is for glass! One of my greens was not, and thus I ended up mixing my greens together and with other colors in order to get multiple shades to make the feathers pop.
Keep in mind you will be using a lot of colors and painting on top of others, so as she says, make sure that you let each coat dry before you put a new coat of paint on the glass. So, if you are in a hurry, these are not going to be the best item to paint. You will also want to bake the glasses once done to be sure the paint doesn’t wash off later!
They turned out much better than I had originally imagined! I knew they would never be perfect, nor would they look exactly like the examples in the original tutorial. However, in the end, I was more satisfied with them than I thought I would be! I even made my own glass (stemless) as my “tester” to be sure colors and lines were going to look correct once I started on the ones I was gifting. I like the ones I gifted better than mine “tester” glass, but at least now that I know what I’m doing, I can always paint some more later.
It was also neat to see what the feather(s) looked like from the inside of the glass.
In the end, they turned out quite nice. I am very satisfied with the finished product and gift for the Peacock’s.
I hope that you feel inspired now to go out and paint your own glasses, whether it be with peacock feathers, or anything else that strikes your fancy!
Have you ever painted on glass before? If so, what did you paint? Did it turn out how you expected? I would love to hear about other glass painting ventures as I really enjoyed this one and would love to do it again!
